In 1985 James Steakley published "The Writings of Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld" in a slim booklet. Since then, the number of writings found has grown enormously. Steakley has revisited them, shown connections and cross-references. Numerous short quotations from books, essays and reports illustrate Hirschfeld's thinking, his language and his way of reasoning. Hirschfeld's autobiographical sketch, which he wrote in English shortly before his death and in which he not only describes his life's work, but also talks about many of his publications, is also included in its whole.
