In a four-part documentary series for NTR (Dutch Public Television), journalist Eelco Bosch van Rosenthal and director Hans Pool sketch a portrait of the most activist generation since the 1970s: Generation Z.

Progressive teenagers and twenty-somethings take to the streets for climate measures, gender diversity and gun control. However, they experience strong resistance from their conservative peers and from members of previous generations.

What it all boils down to? Which freedoms do we cherish, and which deserve protection? Set in Florida, often described as the ground zero of the present culture wars, the series asks one pivotal question. Will the tens of millions of young voters that took Joe Biden to the White House in 2020 show up at the voting booth once more?

The John Adams Institute and NTR will exclusively screen the fourth and final episode of this series (45 min), which will not air on Dutch TV until February 11th.
This in advance of a conversation with a panel of experts and Gen Z’ers. How does Gen Z – both in the U.S. and the Netherlands – look at capitalism, social issues, and elections, and how do they differ from those who came before them?

This episode focuses on some of the most intimate decisions a person can make: the decision to terminate a pregnancy, or to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Both have been made more difficult due to recent decisions by Florida governor Ron DeSantis.
The filmmakers follow Alexander Vargas, a young transgender male in Daytona Beach, and during his quest, and they meet with Anya and Derek Cook, who went through a traumatic experience as a result of the strict abortion laws in their state. Bosch van Rosenthal and Pool also visit Hamburger Mary’s, an Orlando drag show restaurant that took Governor DeSantis and the state of Florida to court, claiming their First Amendment rights were violated.
